This is my admissions essay I sent in for Purdue University, it’s based on why I aspire to be a pediatric dietitan and health specialist. I’m not sure if specializing in Pediatrics is the area I want to go into, but it’s definitely a possibility..so here it goes:
I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the poor boy. People at school probably tease him. He is most likely chosen last for the kick ball teams. And I’m sure he doesn’t have the confidence to stand up to the bullies on the playground. It broke my heart to observe the mother’s glaring lack of concern; all her attention was focused on the large slice of cheesecake she was about to devour. It was her fault her son was obese; he didn’t know the first thing about healthy eating habits. Granted, he did choose the items from the menu, but the mother did not provide any insight to encourage him to make healthy choices. Little does she know, in addition to her son being bullied and pushed around in social surroundings, she is putting her son at risk for heart disease, type two diabetes, and early death. All I can do now is sit and watch, but one day I want to help give little kids like him the chance to make a change.
It devastates me to see overweight or obese children at such an early stage of their lives. This is my motivation to educate children on how to lead healthy life styles through a nutritious diet and exercise. Obesity is a growing problem in the United States due to the lack of knowledge about proper nutrition and the easy access to fast food and other unhealthy choices. I believe one of the most important aspects of happiness is having good health. I hope to show this joy to children and families by providing them information on the importance of nutritious meals and exercise in their lives.
If given the opportunity to attend, Purdue’s Nutrition Fitness and Health (NFH) dual major will provide me with knowledge to effectively implement proper nutrition and fitness into children’s lives as a pediatric dietitian. I want to become a pediatric dietitian because I aim to have a career that will allow me to help young children live healthy lifestyles. Working in this field will allow me to inform children and their families about necessary nutrients for their diets. Children don’t generally embrace change, but I hope to be able to give these families the tools to make a smooth transition in their children’s lives.
Purdue University’s NFH major incorporates the necessary curriculum to help me attain my future aspirations. I want to be able to help people live healthy life styles while enjoying my future career. I love the feeling of making others happy, and I know personal health plays an important role in one’s happiness.
…just a little bit more about me and my future goals, I hope you enjoyed it 🙂 More of my future goals involve implementing nutrition and fitness programs in elementary schools, along with starting groups of running clubs for younger children; then they will see how much fun eating healthy and being active is!
