Why are people encouraged to drink more water when losing weight? Our BMR is raised when we drink more water. BMR is basal metabolic rate, the number of calories your body burns at rest (essentially, when you sleep). Water helps you lose weight because it flushes down the by-products of fat breakdown. Water boosts your metabolism because it increases the rate of burning calories by 30%. . It curbs your appetite and makes you feel full. If you don’t like the taste of water, I recommend using lemons, or if you’re on the go, I love using crystal light or propel packets for my water bottles. I go through several a week, and a few each day because I don’t always like the taste of plain water. Water is the best option when choosing drinks; it has 0 calories and increases your metabolism! Water is a much better choice over sugary juices, pops, and alcoholic beverages. Try to aim for drinking half your body weight in ounces, and if you’re tired of boring water, eat fruit! Since our bodies utilize 12-16 ounces at a time, optimize nutrient absorption from food by drinking 16 oz before each meal, cold drinks will inhibit digestion if they are drank during meals. Drink cold water after and between meals, studies indicate lower body temperature helps with weight loss.
When we don’t have enough water in our systems, we become dehydrated. Dehydration leads to tiredness, migraines, muscle cramps, dry skin, and irregular blood pressure, and irregular blood pressure. That’s why being hydrated will give you energy throughout the day, provide endurance in your workout, and leave you in a better mood. Did you know many times our body tricks us into thinking we’re hungry, but really we’re just dehydrated? This is why I encourage you to drink a glass of water every hour and a glass when you are hungry to test if you’re mistaking dehydration for hunger.

Water also keeps your joints lubricated when you work out, helping prevent cramps and sprains. Water helps fight against the flu, thus it makes you less likely to get sick! Statistics show that drinking a healthy amount of water may reduce the risks of bladder and colon cancer. Water dilutes the concentration of cancer-causing agents in the urine and shortens the time in which they are in contact with bladder lining. The best part, water makes you healthier, when you’re healthy; you’re in a better mood!
